Maaya Thila

The World's Best Night Dive Site

North Ari Atoll 6-30m depth Protected Site

Overview

Maaya Thila is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular dive sites in the world, and arguably the best night dive anywhere. This submerged pinnacle (thila) rises from depths of 30 meters to just 6 meters below the surface, creating a haven for marine life that transforms into an underwater spectacle after dark.

Located in North Ari Atoll, Maaya Thila is a protected marine area that attracts divers from around the globe. The oval-shaped reef is approximately 80 meters long and 50 meters wide, with dramatic overhangs, caves, and crevices that shelter an incredible diversity of species. During day dives, you'll encounter Napoleon wrasse, moray eels, and schools of fusiliers. But it's at night when Maaya Thila truly comes alive.

Night Diving at Maaya Thila

Maaya Thila's reputation as the world's premier night dive site is well-deserved. As darkness falls, the reef transforms into a hunting ground where predators and prey engage in their nightly rituals.

What to Expect at Night

  • Whitetip Reef Sharks: Up to 30 sharks hunt around the thila, gliding past divers in search of sleeping fish
  • Giant Trevallies: These powerful hunters use divers' torch beams to their advantage
  • Spanish Dancers: Beautiful nudibranchs that "dance" through the water
  • Octopuses: Emerge from hiding to hunt across the reef
  • Moray Eels: Free-swimming and hunting in the open
  • Sleeping Turtles: Hawksbill turtles tucked into overhangs

The experience of hovering in the darkness while sharks cruise past your light beam is unforgettable. Many divers describe their first night dive at Maaya Thila as a life-changing experience.
