Baa Atoll was designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 2011, protecting one of the most important marine ecosystems in the Maldives. It is home to Hanifaru Bay, where up to 200 manta rays congregate during the southwest monsoon to feed on plankton blooms.
