Baa Atoll was designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 2011, protecting one of the most important marine ecosystems in the Maldives. It is home to Hanifaru Bay, where up to 200 manta rays congregate during the southwest monsoon to feed on plankton blooms.

Hanifaru Bay was beyond words! We counted over 50 mantas feeding in one session. The UNESCO protection really shows - the reefs are pristine and teeming with life.
